One of the classic British beers, and possibly the best beer from Wales, this is a dark and subtle brew with a suggestion of chocolate and black tea in the nose. Deep and darkest black in colour with a gorgeous blackcurrant fringe as the light catches and penetrates the edges. A blackcurrant flavour is hinted at when drawing in the fumes just before the liquid touches the lips. A darkly fruitish and barely sweet malt fleetingly embraces the tongue, cleansing and restoring, before vanishing down the throat leaving the merest hint of hops in the mouth. Watery may be a possible description - but if only all water tasted this pleasant! Review submitted by: Silk Tork |

Its like nature's own liquid. A mindblowing fest of exquisite sensations. This beer has to be served cold with a half an inch head for maximum enjoyment. The rich, tangy aroma coupled with a subtle nuttiness teases the palate. To enjoy this beer at its best, I would suggest quaffing at least a gallon of this precious liquid. A top beer 10/10

Bottled Version 3.9% abv, bottle conditioned.
An ordinary dark mild, not good and not bad.

Silk Tork's review is of the canned version, and it sounds quite different to the bottle (500ml and, as Geoff says, 3.9% and bottle-conditioned). It's a fantastic beer. Though it has more depth, intensity and complexity of flavour than most cask milds, it's still distinctively a dark mild. It pours as dark as stout, with a shy and fleeting head and a nose of sweet fudge and toffee. There's a surprising, sharp spritziness in the mouth, with tastes of cola, light-roast coffee, mild, dark, chocolate and more than a hint of smokiness. For a beer of relatively low alcohol content, there's sackloads of flavour here and a surprisingly warm and tingly finish. It's warming and nourishing and not at all ordinary. Currently (Feb '05) on the shelves of my local Sainsbury's as part of their "beer festival" but I'm trying to deplete their stocks as best I can.

Mark is spot on, this is a sublime beer for its type & strength. I'm on my to Sainsburys now, beware check out bag boy, it's gonna be a heavy load!

I love this mild. It is packed full of flavor. I discovered it at Sainsbury's. Apparently it was not selling well. I suppose people would rather drink "beers to dine for". Anyway, that is ok by me because they lowered the price to 90 pence a bottle. I must have bought about 20.

The bottle conditioned version at 3.9% is a superb drink. Can't think of a better bottle conditoned mild.

Brilliant on draught, and often found at Asda. Great flavour, can't improve on Mike Griffin's comments. Spot on.

Sampled cask conditioned (hand pump) at the Brains bar at the GBBF 2008. Black colour, dark brown in the highlights. Moderate tan head. Moderate roasty aroma, notes of malts and chocolate. The flavour is moderately roasty with a slight acidity. Score: 6
