This is a strong, dark, abbey-style beer. The nose is particularly complex and contains lots of sweet malt tempered with hop flowers, but with underlying spice (cloves?) and some fruity, almost jammy notes (plum jam). On the tongue it is extremely lively, and quite strong and sweet on the palate in the manner of a barley wine (although its 9 percent ABV is well disguised). Hops are also abundant in the taste, imparting a subtle bitterness to balance the malty sweetness. The finish is long, building into a cloying, malty, chocolatey aftertaste that seems to cover the tongue and linger for a long time. This is an ideal port substitute after a meal.

The Ciney beers are now simply labelled that they're from Alken-Maes, with the address of the Maes brewery in Waarloos, in the province of Antwerpen. The group is now owned by Scottish Courage of Edinburgh.

I recently tasted the Ciney Special and the Ciney Brune. Both were very good beers. The Special is strong, but well balanced. There is a smooth sweetness without an offensive cloying taste. A very good beer that I would buy again. The Brune is even smoother and better blanced. A thoroughly enjoyable beer, but more of an "everyday" beer than the Special. Another beer that I would buy again. I was very pleased with both products.

I visited Belgium last spring and fell in love with the Ciney Beers. Is there any possible way to purchase and received in the United States? I am dreaming of this beer!!!!

Been drinking the stuff for 10 years now. Like the Blonde best. Used to be served in all your finest Gendarmarie posts.
