This is a 'particularly strong ale' from Usher's. The nose consists of rich, fruity malt with a fairly heavy-handed portion of hop flowers (styrians), hinting at the richness to come. The head is bubbly and lasts to the bottom of the glass. On the palate it is firm, rich and full-bodied, with more fruit notes (prunes, plums and dates). It is quite sweet and treacley, but this is balanced by a bracing hop bitterness (Target). There is also a kick to it that gives a good indication of its strength. Finish becomes more hoppy again, along with lingering spirit notes in the back of the throat. This is a very drinkable, enjoyable, well-balanced strong beer in the 'old ale' style.

Never tried this in bottled form, however, the early draught experiments back in the very early 90s were known just as Particular, which was in polypins. This tended to improve with age, and also got stronger with age too. By far my favourite Ushers beer (closely followed by their porter - name had something to do with a horse?), when 1824 was introduced there was confusion down here over whether Particular would continue. Eventually there was the product reviewed above, whether it's an amalgam of two ales I don't know, nor do I pretend to!
