This is an unfiltered, vegetarian, organic pilsner brewed to the Rheinheitsgebot (German purity laws) from ingredients supplied by Bioland organic farmers. It has a fine, quite creamy and long-lived head and an aroma of light hops, malt and vanilla, with yeasty notes. The flavour contains more malt and perhaps less hops than most pilsners, but also has a rounded bitterness from both, with an unfermented wort character to the taste. It is also softened by the light yeasty haze, from which the vanilla notes probably come. There are oranges on the back of the throat - the fruit rather than the zest - and there is a slightly harsh alcohol twang towards the finish that seems to imply greater strength. Aftertaste is malty with hoppy bitterness, but a little cloying, although the coldness of the beer straight from the fridge serves to mollify this. An interesting pilsner, less bland than some of the organic beers listed here, but nothing exceptional. OBBD reviewer: Sparks |
