AchouffeMc ChouffeABV 8.5% Vol 750 ml bottle Belgium Expensive Flavour 7

This is a Belgian brune from the Brasserie d'Achouffe, presumably intended to be a Scotch ale (deduced from the name and the fact that the little bloke on the front is wearing a kilt). It is a typical Belgian brune in colour, with the genre's characteristically firm, bubbly, long-lived head. The nose is fruity, woody and smoky - one of us described it as reminiscent of 'a walk in the woods'. There is also an estery hint in the upper register, frequently encountered in many styles of Belgian ale. On the palate it is earthy and fruity - both light citrus and dark fruits - with an underlying darker maltiness. This is lightened by a slight phenolic quality on the roof of the mouth. These light characteristics might lead one to think the beer is less potent than it is; indeed the aftertaste is the only place where the strength shows at all. Towards the finish the fruit become more prominent and the aftertaste is all light malty fruit; the kick comes from spirit notes which remain until long after the bottle has been emptied. Plezant biertje. [Pleasant beer.]

I am a big fan of McChouffe. Managed to get some old bottles (6-7 years), some has gone rather "cheesy", but others have mellowed, whilst retaining the fruity darkness of the original.
Excellent to cook with (beef cooked in McChouffe is an epiphany!!)

Tried this beer five years ago in a bar just a little way from the brewery in Achouffe, had three glasses didn't realise the strength until walking back to the chalet, brought a crate home with me. luvly stuff

Tried the La Chouffe and was very disappointed. This seemed to have a touch more character to it. Hints of berries. But still that thumping alcohol base. I still don't find this well balanced at all. Probably will age well.....but even good beers while they are still young, aren't so strongly dominated by those alcoholic/phenol notes.
Each to their own. Not for mine.Cheers.

Plezant biertje indeed! Really liked this, it's similar to Verboden Vrucht but with a more obvious alcohol kick. I'm a bit perplexed by the 'Scotch ale' tag they put on it, though. If we made beers like this in Scotland I'd be in heaven!
