Liberty is the single hop variety used in this bottle-conditioned ale from K&B. The beer's name comes from the alleged last sighting of a dragon in England, in the 16th century in Faygate near Horsham. Although described as golden on the bottle, it is a little darker than that, with a white, fine-bubbled head that leaves a lasting thin coating on the beer. Nose is of citrusy hops, with a nutty malt content and a slightly spicy tinge. In the mouth it is hoppy and slightly bitter, but with a distinctly sharp lemon and lime citrus flavour that hits the sides of the tongue. It is somewhat balanced by a gentle touch of medium-roast, toasty malt, more noticeable in larger mouthfuls, or when the beer is swirled round the mouth. Aftertaste is largely citrusy and tart, but with both a hoppy and a toasty element discernible. If anything, adding the conditioning yeast makes the beer more citrusy. Although this is a very pleasant pint, the sour citrus notes are perhaps slightly too much to make it a good session beer. Definitely worth a try, though.
