This beer was originally picked up in a shop in St David, Pembrokeshire (at the time, the brewery appeared on the label as 'Bragwr Arbennig'). All the bottled beers from this small brewery are produced in small batches and are bottle-conditioned. It is quite fruity in the nose, with some oranges and other citrus, grapes, plums and a touch of raspberries, plus a little spice and even some heather. It is well balanced in the mouth, with malty bitterness and chewy dark fruit, countered by spicy hops that don't leave it too bitter or hoppy. Malt is clearly the main characteristic, with many fruit identifiable throughout (raspberries, redcurrants, plums), lasting well into the finish. Aftertaste is bittersweet, with fruity malt and a touch of caramel, leaving a dryish ending to an otherwise fruity, malty beer. Well-balanced, very drinkable and totally lovely. It is also suitable for vegans, in common with the brewery's other beers.

Fine beer, now available in certain Safeway stores in South Wales along with the rest of the brewery's excellent range.

From Ceredigion in mid Wales comes this craft-brewed bottle-conditioned bitter with its attractive hand-drawn label; the farmhouse brewery's products are mainly sold locally but this bottle found its way across the border and down to the Utobeer beer stall at Greenwich market (www.utobeer.co.uk). Doses of crystal and amber malt mixed with pale Maris Otter give it a reddish-copper colour, pouring with a thick head but a soft, restrained texture. The aroma is mainly hoppy (Challenger and First Gold are used) with biscuity malt and spices, leading to a crisp clean malty palate with flowery citric fruit and the distinct taste of blackcurrant. A firm, grapefruity bitterness develops and lingers in a nice, long and very mooreish finish. This is a resolutely modern bitter in the Coniston Bluebird mould, refreshingly fruity with delicate flowery hopping, and intriguingly complex, deserving to be much wider-known. It's also an additive-free beer which, conscientious vegetarians will be interested to know, is made without using any animal ingredients. [Score: 7.5]

The Ceredigion Brewery was formed in a converted barn in 1997 by husband and wife team Julia and Brian Tilby. It is Julia who is responsible for the attractive drawings on the labels. All their beers are bottle conditioned and primed with raw demerara sugar. The aroma is delicately fruity with a hint of China tea. The tea theme is continued in the taste which is initially a fruit burst but is quickly overtaken by fragrant hops, overlaid by China tea, before finishing with a delightful coming together of the fruit and hops. A very delicate and charming beer.

The Utobeer stall is at Borough Market (London Bridge) not Greenwich Market. BTW it was stocked by UTOBEER as one of the partners is a Welshy.
