This is a good dark ale, with a not too strong roasted malt flavour. This is also not too sweet either, don't like really sweet beers. Good value for money beer. Review submitted by: Andy |

This is one of my favorite beers in the world.

If you are ever on the South Island of New Zealand it's an opportunity not to miss.

A superb ale, in the true tradition of ale brewing. It has a wonderful, full, malty flavour and has a rich, full palate.
This ale is the ideal accompaniment to almost any meal that you care to name. It is perfect with roasts, casseroles, curries, a ham sandwich and yes, even with fish and chips! This has to be the best dark ale that can be found anywhere and beats any Aussie, or Pommie beer by a country mile. The only ale that comes anywhere near close to it is Newcastle Brown Ale.
Unfortunately, it seems to available only in NZ and, now that my family and I are back in Australia, we are suffering severe withdrawal symptoms every dinner time. Time for another holiday in NZ!!!

I spent a month in New Zealand, and this was the hands down winner among my buddies and I. I am trying desperately to see if I can get any in the states.

It is a great beer and as a bonus it is available everywhere. Good for all occasions

Is there an importer, or a store, in the States that has this awsome beer?
Jim
The malty tones are complex in coffee, burnt breakfast cereal, chocolate, oh so interesting and yummy. The label says it is made with 5 malts and it is a wonderful experience trying to pick them all out. Not overly bitter, but a fine balance with the malt.
This is the beer that started me homebrewing! I had never tasted anything like this before. I used to live in Dunedin NZ and miss Speight's Old Dark so much.
Price is about NZ$1.50 a 330ml bottle, not cheap compared to mega-swill. Also sold in cans. Available everywhere in New Zealand. Especially good on tap a the local. This is not a mega-swill or session beer. This is to be savoured and you get full after a few of them.
Cheers to James Speight of Dunedin New Zealand
