This micro in Maidstone, established in 1999, now offers quite a range of bottle-conditioned ales. Smugglers Glory commemorates one of Kent's less respectable historic industries, and is brewed with Maris Otter pale malt, crystal malt, roast malt, chocolate malt and Fuggles and Goldings hops. Although no beer style is specified, with its deep chestnut brown colour and roasty character, it's more-or-less a porter. The head is light, and the aroma malty and yeasty with traces of liquorice. The palate is unexpectedly restrained at first, and lightly malty, with a bit of fruit and a slight acidic tang. Hints of roastiness come into their own in the finish, which also has some rounded but occasionally cheek-pursing hoppiness before finishing on strong smoked ham whiffs. A pleasant and very drinkable beer with plenty of flavour.
