This weissbeer was tasted alongside another - Hacklberg Hefeweizen. It pours a cloudy, dark straw colour with a big, foamy, long-lived head. Nose is wheaty, with vanilla notes and a touch of cloves. It is quite lively in the mouth and the flavour is initially of bananas, with a more typical citrusy orange/lemon tang with bubblegum quickly becoming evident. Barley malt flavours are evident as well as wheat ones, giving the beer a decent amount of body. It is also spicy, with notes of cloves and cinnamon. Finish and aftertaste are lemon-rind acidic/bitter. Grassy hops also come through in the aftertaste. There is clearly quite a lot to this beer, which is a pleasantly full-bodied and complex yet refreshing example of the style. From the label, it seems to be made with hops rather than extract, which is likely to account for the more obvious hop flavours in the finish. OBBD reviewer: Sparks |
