In common with other Lakeland Brewing Company beers, this BCA takes its name from the title of an Arthur Ransome book set in the English Lake District. It has a sour, almost vinegary nose (much like the original porters, or possibly malt vinegar) and a frothy, high-rise head. It is sparkly and lively on the tongue, with some of the sour vinegar coming through, although it is tempered by a balanced hoppiness and some lighter, sweeter malt notes. Lots of citrusy notes are also prominent, chiefly oranges but with a twist of lemon. Mixing the conditioning yeast into the beer serves to make it a touch more bitter. Aftertaste is burnt and woody, but shortish. This is a beer that starts off indifferent but quickly grows on you as you get used to the unusual mixture of flavours. Fans of Belgian gueuzes or red ales might find this appealing.

The book is set in the Hebrides, in actuality, or somewhere there for the purpose of the book, as it's not in fact stated, but definitely it's not in the Lake District! It's also called "Great Northern?", although the ? would not suit as a title.

"BCA takes its name from the title of an Arthur Ransome book set in the English Lake District." Actually Great Northern is set in the Isles off Scotland. [Oops - Ed.]
