Attractive copper red in colur with an off-white loose head which lasts well down the glass. Initial aroma is malt with a little caramel. Taste is of caramel and lightly kilned malt - perhaps Vienna style. Beer is a little overcarbonated but the body isn't too bad. Middle taste is of caramelly malt with some bitterness and a little hop. Finish is fairly long, bitter and malty. This is I think an interpretation of a Vienna style beer (but too dark for it) but with some southern German dunkel characteristics though it is too bitter for that. In short it is a bit of a hybrid and hard to place stylistically. Perhaps just a dark lager? Maybe a Scottish export? I bought this on a whim in Leeds and it is not bad. Worth a second go I would say but very hard to place. The style police would have a fit. Review submitted by: Peter Alexander |

Hi! This beer is quite ok, but we have several better in Latvia. Anyway, nice to hear that Latvian beer has reached England!
Gints Rotcenkovs
It is regular Latvian Dark beer. Only not as strong as others. The bad thing is that no one knows best Latvian Dark beers - as Satans or Tervetes Tumsais. But still it is one of the best (in group of dark beers).

I first tasted Tumsais in Riga two years ago and found it very much to my taste as I am very partial to Old Speckled Hen. I get Tumsais delivered to my home in Yorksire (England)at £1.00 per bottle,a good beer at a good price.

I traveled to Latvia with my husband in 1997 and brought back several bottles of Aldaris Tumsais. Although the 'drink by date' had come and gone 2 years ago - I found a bottle while cleaning out my cupboard and decided to give it a whirl! I LOVED it! It is unlike anything else I drink. Now I just need to know how to get my hands on more!

Have consumed it off and on since 1936. Hard to locate it in the US, but worth the search. It feels thick and creamy, the foam could almost float a dime. Two bottles satiate any thirst. Sveiks!

I preferred this beer before they started adding extra caramel to it. It's OK but I prefer other Latvian Dark beers like Lacplesis, Satans (Piebalgas), or Uzavas
