A bière de Mars is a seasonal beer, traditionally marking the brewing season for strong beers to last over the summer months. This example from Brasserie d'Achouffe is about the right strength for the style, although not that strong when compared to other beers from the same brewery. It is a golden colour with a tight, creamy and long-lived head. Nose is citrusy and spicy, with delicate yeast notes. In the mouth it is beautifully smooth - ridiculously so for its strength - with mouth-filling spicy coriander and pepper notes. It is quite dry but not overly bitter, with light hop flower notes discernible amongst the spice. Light fruit (lemons and grapes) is also present, but without any sweetness. There is a subtle alcohol hint on the back of the throat, more like a sherry than a spirit, but it's not blatant - you have to hunt for it. Aftertaste is lemony and quite spicy, with the peppery spice flavours lingering on the roof of the mouth. This is a stunningly good strong ale, far more drinkable than it has any right to be - a weaker but smoother version of La Chouffe. OBBD reviewer: Sparks |

I don't really like it cause it doesn't drunken me as I expected.

I love all sort of beers, I'm a pure BELGE. This one is very special and I particulary love it.

I finally opened my bottle of this brew. Very nice, it's like a combination of the Chouffe spicy house characters mixed with a great French bière de garde. It doesn't seem as malty as a true bière de Mars. All this brewery's products are great, but they're very touchy in terms of storage and serving temperature. If you don't like your first bottle, you'll probably like the next one.

Alan said: 'if you don't like your first bottle, you'll probably like the next one'. I don't think I'll waste money on a 'next one'. I like most of the Achouffe brews but this was unimpressive bordering on not very good. The initial nose was that of a slightly skunky Heinies, not much to it flavorwise. Slightly hoppy with a tad of floral taste. No spice, coriander or fruit. Semi dry finish. I'm being generous when I give this a 4.5.

The best of the Achouffe beers - wonderful. The problem with it is availability. Where can I get hold of some?
